Caring for a Senior Cat on a Budget: What Helped Marshmallow Feel Like Herself Again
We love our pets and would do anything to make their lives better or to help them when they are sick. But almost every pet owner knows that sinking feeling when your fur baby is having an issue and life is already overwhelming. You are busy, financially stretched, and dreading the looming experience of the vet bill.
Of course, we all know the difference between something that is life-threatening and something that requires immediate medical care. But this story is about the smaller issues that still cause stress and worry. The kinds of problems that sometimes can be managed at home when you have the right information and tools.
Meet Marshmallow
My darling cat Marshmallow is my spirit animal. She is the Queen of Snuggles and always content curled up beside me. I have had her for nearly ten beautiful years, and she has been a constant source of comfort and love through every stage of my life. She is not just a pet. She is family.
When something feels off with her, I feel it deeply.
When the Hairballs Started Turning Into Something More
One day, Marshmallow began having hairballs regularly, which had never been an issue for her before. Soon after, her shedding became noticeably worse. Since it was a heavy shedding season and she is entering her senior years, I was not immediately alarmed. I increased brushing and stayed consistent with her routine.
Unfortunately, that did not help. Instead of producing hairballs, she began vomiting her food.
At first, everything I read online said the same thing. If it was happening once a day, she was acting normal, playful, eating, and following her usual routines, it could be her stomach trying to rebalance. I hoped that once the hairball issue passed, her digestion would settle.
It did not.
The Dreaded Vet Call and a Hard Reality
I finally called the vet to ask questions and check availability. That familiar dread set in hard.
Many pet owners understand this feeling. Life circumstances can change, bills can stack up, and even routine veterinary care can feel overwhelming. Still, our love for our animals never changes, and we want to do what is best for them with the resources we have.
Before committing to a vet visit, I decided to try one last option at home.
Researching Food for a Senior Cat With a Sensitive Stomach
Several sources suggested two possible issues. One was that Marshmallow may have developed a food intolerance after years of eating the same formula. The other was that as she aged, she may need food with better probiotic support to aid digestion.
I did not think of Marshmallow as a senior, but I started researching foods anyway. I read ingredient lists carefully and spent hours reading reviews from other cat owners facing similar problems.
One food kept standing out during my research. It was designed specifically for senior cats, high in protein, grain-free, and included probiotics for digestive health.
That food was Nulo FreeStyle High Protein and Natural Grain-Free Senior Dry Cat Food.
Why This Food Worked for My Senior Cat
What stood out to me during my research was how intentionally this food was formulated.
First, it uses a novel protein blend of Alaska pollock and duck. These proteins are less commonly used in traditional cat foods and can be easier on digestion for cats who may develop sensitivities after eating the same proteins for years.
Second, Nulo includes a Digestive Advantage blend with natural fibers from ingredients like Miscanthus grass and dried chicory root, along with a patented probiotic designed to support digestive health. This combination helps gently regulate digestion rather than relying on fillers.
Finally, I appreciated that Nulo does not replace grains with white potatoes or tapioca, which are common substitutes in many grain-free foods. Instead, it uses whole peas and lentils to provide energy and nutrition in a way that feels more intentional and balanced.
Together, these details made me feel confident trying this food for Marshmallow while we were dealing with vomiting and digestive upset.
On paper, it sounded like exactly what she needed. In reality, I still had one big hurdle to get through.
The Challenge of a Picky Eater
Marshmallow is an extremely picky eater. If it is not her usual kibble or a specific wet food she already loves, she will not touch it. Even adding the smallest amount of probiotic powder to food she normally enjoys results in complete refusal.
I knew this might be a battle.
I introduced the new food slowly by mixing it into her existing kibble. She ate it without hesitation, which felt like a small victory. Unfortunately, the vomiting continued, and my worry increased.
At that point, I asked myself whether switching her completely to the new food could help faster if this truly was a food intolerance issue.
Most sources said that while there could be minor drawbacks, it was safe to try.
The Turning Point
I switched Marshmallow to only the new kibble.
She resisted at first, but eventually hunger won. Within a few days, she had her first night without vomiting.
After that, the only times she became sick were when she snuck bites of the other cat’s food or when I tried to reintroduce treats too soon.
The Results After One Month
After a little over a month on Nulo, the difference has been remarkable.
Her coat is noticeably softer.
Shedding has decreased dramatically.
The vomiting has stopped completely.
Most importantly, she is comfortable again.
Seeing her rest peacefully and enjoy her meals without discomfort later, was a relief I did not realize I needed.
Should You Try This Food for Your Cat?
Every pet is different, and I always recommend consulting your veterinarian if issues persist or worsen. That said, if you are dealing with frequent hairballs, vomiting, or digestive upset in a senior cat, this food was genuinely a lifesaver for us.
I have linked the food below so you can read reviews or see if it feels like a good fit for your own cat.
I recently ordered their senior wet food as well and plan to share an update once that transition is complete. Wish us luck!
