The Baby Toys That Actually Kept Our Little One Happy (Without Buying Everything)

As first-time parents living with the ever-growing cost of living, we simply couldn't buy everything. We wanted to be thoughtful about what came into our home, choosing items we genuinely thought would enrich our son's days rather than filling our apartment with things that might only be used once or twice.
A couple of these were gifts, and I'm honestly so grateful because they weren't all things I would have thought to buy myself. Some ended up becoming everyday favorites that I now wouldn't hesitate to recommend.
These are the toys that actually earned their place in our home during our son's first few months.
Blissful Diary Baby Play Gym Mat
When I was shopping for a play gym, I remember seeing all the fancy versions with kick pianos and lots of extra features. I actually wondered if I would regret choosing a simpler one.
Looking back, I'm really glad I did.
Our son absolutely loved lying underneath the hanging toys. It gave me some precious hands-free moments while he happily kicked his little legs, waved his arms around, made all sorts of excited noises, and eventually started grabbing the rattle handle and shaking the entire gym.
One thing I especially came to appreciate was the completely open design. Our little guy confidently started rolling from back to tummy, tummy to back, pivoting, and even trying to worm himself forward around 3½ months old. With no kick piano or large toy board taking up space, he had plenty of room to practice moving in every direction without bonking his head.
He also discovered that grabbing and chewing on the arches themselves was pretty entertaining.
I didn't even set this up until he was about a month and a half old because we were living in a very small apartment and he was still so tiny. Most of our tummy time happened on our chests or on the bed. Once we started using this though, it quickly became one of our most-used baby items.
Our baby enjoyed the crinkly square and the little soft book the most, and I also loved that we could easily swap in different hanging toys as he grew.
And of course, it matched our soft sage aesthetic.
Bright Starts Snuggle & Teethe Plush - Giraffe
If I had to pick one favorite toy from these first few months, it would be another gift we received, this little giraffe.
For whatever reason, our son absolutely loves it.
Before he even started putting everything in his mouth, he simply seemed fascinated by looking at it. It consistently got the biggest smiles from him. Now he giggles when I make his giraffe dance and talk to him.
Once chewing became his main hobby, this toy became even more loved. He enjoys chewing on the soft fabric and hugging it to his body. He loves the crinkle sound.
I also discovered that hanging it front and center on his play gym kept him entertained much longer.
We never leave the house without it.
It even seemed like he recognized the giraffe illustration inside the little soft book that came with his play gym. Every time we reached that page, he became noticeably interested, which was such a sweet moment to watch.
Ubbi Mirror Me Activity Toy
One thing I specifically wanted to add to our collection was a baby-safe mirror.
I was honestly surprised by how many baby mirrors looked like fun house mirrors. The clearer ones often seemed to be much larger, designed to mount to the wall, or included pull-up bars that just weren't practical for our apartment or our baby's current stage.
I took a chance on the Ubbi Mirror Me Activity Toy, and I'm really glad I did.
The mirror itself is surprisingly clear, especially for the price. The very edges have a slight fun house effect, but the main viewing area is much better than most baby mirrors I've seen.
One thing I especially appreciate is that the entire toy is built as a soft triangular activity block. I found a few mirrors with clearer reflections, but they often had hard stands or rigid frames that I personally wouldn't feel comfortable letting my baby use independently without watching every second. This one still gives us a much clearer reflection than most baby mirrors while remaining soft enough that I feel comfortable letting him explore it on his own.
The triangle design naturally props the mirror at a slight angle. I actually like this because it seems to encourage our son to push up on his arms a little more to look at himself. Babies who are still spending a lot of time resting with their head flat on the floor may not always be able to see themselves from that angle, but we've also stood it on its side so the mirror sits completely upright. We've enjoyed using it both ways.
The mirror isn't the only thing he enjoys.
The detachable teether has been an immediate favorite. I especially like that it's small enough for his little hands to hold easily, and the ridged texture gives him something interesting to explore before, of course, bringing it straight to his mouth.
The peek-a-boo crinkle flaps have also been a hit since he already loves anything that crinkles. They're a fun way for him to practice reaching, grabbing, and hand-eye coordination.
It also comes with three double-sided cards featuring shapes, animals, and numbers, and I like that you can attach additional toys to it as your baby grows.
My only real complaint is the little pull tabs on the cards. I wasn't a fan of the cardboard tabs sticking out since babies have a habit of bumping into everything. The cards slide in and out easily without using the tabs, so we'll probably trim them off to make them flush.
Overall, this ended up being exactly the kind of baby mirror I was hoping to find, and I'm excited to see our son continue growing into all the different ways it can be used.
Nuby Silicone Wrist Teething Mitten ("Sucky-Bear")
This was actually a gift. We started using it around three months, and it ended up being far more useful for our breastfed baby than pacifiers ever were. He never showed much interest in pacifiers, but he absolutely enjoys this.
We call it his "sucky-bear."
Even before he could reliably hold onto the center bar, he could easily grab the openings and bring it right to his mouth to get down to business. It also gave him good practice using his little hands while soothing himself.
Whenever we leave the house, I make sure his sucky-bear comes with us.
Bat Baby Mobile from sweety baby
As much as we love cozy sage greens and earthy colors around our home, we also have a soft spot for gothic decor and Halloween.
So naturally...
We bought our son a bat mobile.
He has loved looking at it since he was just a few weeks old, and I imagine the high-contrast black and white colors helped make it especially interesting for him.
It also gave us a fun little family tradition.
We call it his Bat Mobile, like Batman.
Dad spins it while narrating dramatic "bat races" as all the bats chase each other around. It's become one of those silly little moments that always makes us smile. Our baby squeals in excitement!
Accfore DIY Crib Mobile Arm
This isn't a fancy recommendation, but it worked.
The separate mobile arm fit both our bedside bassinet and later our crib, which meant we could keep using the same mobile set instead of buying another setup.
We attached it to the thickest part of the short side of our bassinet (here I talk more about our experience with the Baby Delight Beside Me Dreamer Bassinet), and now it works just as well on our slatted crib (we chose the Colby by Davinci Low Profile 4-in-1 Crib).
The rubber grips on the claw helped it stay in place. It could get bumped sideways if someone knocked it or if the mobile was grabbed by our baby going in and out of bed, but it never tipped forward into the bassinet or crib while we were using it.
Sometimes simple is exactly what you need.
Joyreal High Contrast Baby Toys Set
This isn't the fanciest toy set out there, but we've gotten a surprising amount of use from it.
The spiral toy that wraps around the car seat handle has probably been the biggest hit. It slides side to side a bit, which is a little annoying, but mostly it stays in place alright and our son loves looking at it.
The little bear rattle has also been one of his favorites. He enjoys looking at it, shaking it, listening to it, and now chewing on it.
The foldable high-contrast piece originally lived between the arches of his play gym during tummy time, and now we tie it to his crib while he plays there.
The contrast cards were a cute bonus too, although we've generally preferred reading books together (the biggest hit from day one has been Put Me in the Zoo by Robert Lopshire).
Babies Don't Need Everything
One thing becoming a parent has taught me is that babies really don't need every new toy or gadget on the market.
Some of Endy's favorite things aren't toys at all.
He still happily chews on muslin burp cloths, loves watching the trees outside, enjoys listening to us talk and sing to him (especially singing!), and is perfectly content spending time cuddling or simply watching the world around him or running his little hands through our cat's soft fur.
These toys absolutely earned their place in our home because they genuinely kept him engaged, happy, and entertained during those first few months.
But if you're a first-time parent trying to be thoughtful with your budget like we were, I hope this encourages you that you don't have to buy everything.
A few well-loved toys, plenty of interaction, and lots of love can go a very long way.
