Why I Switched to a Non-Aerosol Dry Shampoo (and Why I've Stuck With It)

Some people can buy a product in five minutes.

I'm not one of those people.

If there's one thing about me, it's that I tend to fall down research rabbit holes before buying just about anything. I compare ingredient lists, read reviews, and spend way too much time trying to find the option that feels like the best fit for our home. Sometimes it's probably a little excessive, but that's just how I am.

Dry shampoo ended up being one of those products.

For years I used traditional aerosol dry shampoo without thinking much about it. It worked, so I kept buying it. But as I started making more natural swaps around our home, I realized it was one of the products I wanted to rethink.

I wanted to move away from aerosol sprays, and I also wanted to find a dry shampoo made with as few, as naturally derived ingredients as possible.

After comparing quite a few brands, I kept coming back to Handmade Heroes.

Why I Chose the Lighter Formula

Even though I'm a light brunette and probably would have matched the darker shade better, I intentionally bought the lighter version.

The reason had nothing to do with color.

It was my furbabies.

If you've been around Hearth & Harmony, you've probably noticed that my pets influence a lot of the decisions I make. Whenever I bring something new into our home, I naturally think about how it could affect them.

Powder dry shampoo doesn't just stay in your hair. A little inevitably falls onto the bathroom counter or floor, some becomes airborne while you're applying it, and whatever is left in my hair eventually ends up on the pillow where my cats love to cuddle with me.

When I compared the ingredient lists, I noticed the darker version contains peppermint, lavender, eucalyptus, and geranium essential oils.

I actually love those scents.

Normally I would have considered them a bonus.

But because I share my home with curious pets who groom themselves and spend half the day rubbing against me, I decided I'd rather skip the essential oils altogether. Giving up the pleasant scent felt like a very small sacrifice for the peace of mind it gave me.

The lighter formula contains just five ingredients:

  • Rice Powder

  • Kaolin Clay

  • Coconut Fruit Extract

  • Turmeric Root Extract

  • Vanilla Fruit Extract

That simple ingredient list was exactly what I had been hoping to find.

Now that my baby boy is here, I appreciate that decision even more. I still apply it carefully and try not to create unnecessary dust, but I love knowing I'm using a product with a short, naturally derived ingredient list.

Why I Wanted to Ditch Aerosol Dry Shampoo

The ingredients weren't the only reason I switched.

I also wanted to stop spraying an aerosol around my face every time I needed to freshen my hair.

Traditional aerosol dry shampoos use propellants like butane to disperse the product into a fine mist. While those products are considered safe when used as directed, I personally preferred moving away from aerosol propellants altogether and using a simple powder that I could massage directly into my roots instead.

It just felt more aligned with the kind of products I'm slowly trying to bring into our home.

Natural living, for me, isn't about perfection.

It's about making thoughtful choices where I can.

Does It Actually Work?

Thankfully, yes.

After about a year and a half of using this dry shampoo, I can honestly say I love it.

I simply sprinkle it onto my roots, massage it into my scalp with my fingertips, brush through my hair, and wash my hands afterward.

That's it.

It absorbs oil really well and gives my hair a little extra volume without feeling sticky or heavy.

Since I intentionally bought the lighter shade, there are occasional times when I use a little too much and notice a slight white cast at first. If that happens, I just give it a few more minutes to absorb the oil, brush through my hair again, and it blends in naturally.

One thing I especially appreciate is that it hardly has any scent at all.

I know some people love heavily fragranced dry shampoos, but I actually enjoy that this one simply refreshes my hair without leaving behind a strong perfume smell.

A Product That Became Even More Useful After Having a Baby

If you've ever gone through the newborn stage, you know there are mornings when washing your hair just isn't going to happen.

Postpartum life made me appreciate this dry shampoo even more.

Between caring for my son, breastfeeding, and trying to squeeze showers into nap times, it's been incredibly nice having something that helps my hair look refreshed in just a couple of minutes.

Final Thoughts

I've been using Handmade Heroes' non-aerosol dry shampoo for about a year and a half now, and I genuinely don't see myself switching anytime soon.

I originally bought it because I wanted a non-aerosol option with a shorter, more naturally derived ingredient list that I felt good about using in a home shared with my pets.

It ended up giving me everything I was hoping for.

It works well, the ingredient list is refreshingly simple, there's barely any scent, and it's become one of those little swaps that fits naturally into the more intentional home I'm trying to create.

Sometimes the products that stay in our routines the longest aren't the trendiest ones. They're simply the ones that quietly fit the life we're trying to build.
