DaVinci Premium 2-Stage Crib & Toddler Mattress Review: Our Experience So Far

When we transitioned my baby from his bedside bassinet to his crib, I was pleasantly surprised by how comfortable his new mattress seemed. As a first-time mom, I had assumed that all infant-safe sleep surfaces were going to feel about as hard as his bassinet mattress. In my mind, that firmness was simply part of what made a sleep surface safe for a baby. I didn't realize he could have a mattress that still met the needs of infant sleep while feeling so much more cushioned and comfortable.

Our DaVinci Premium 2-Stage Crib & Toddler Mattress arrived about a week after he learned how to roll. I would always place him down on his back, but once he could roll himself over, he quickly started choosing to sleep on his belly. No matter how many times I found him that way, that was apparently where he wanted to be.

At first, he hadn't quite mastered turning his head to the side every time and would sometimes just face-plant straight down into the mattress (much to our horror, we did not sleep much that first week). Even now that he's figured that part out, he'll rub his face back and forth against the mattress when he's sleepy. Since he was suddenly determined to spend so much time on his belly, I really appreciated that this mattress felt softer and had more give than the hard bassinet mattress he'd been sleeping on before.

And the rolling definitely didn't stop there. He now rolls and pivots himself in every direction, sometimes surprisingly fast, and pops himself around the crib as he explores. When we first put him on the mattress to let him feel out his new space, he seemed perfectly happy to hang out and play on it.

Obviously, my baby can't tell me what he thinks of his mattress, but everything I've seen from him makes me feel like he's very comfortable on it.

It actually made me wonder whether I would have considered putting his crib in our bedroom earlier if we'd had more space when he was born. At the same time, I absolutely loved having him right beside me in his bedside bassinet during those early months, so I'm not sure I would change that experience either. Infant and Toddler Sides

I also liked that this is a dual-sided mattress, with one side for infants and another for toddlers. I don't personally notice a huge difference between the two sides when I feel them, but I still appreciate having the option to flip it as he gets older for a little added comfort rather than buying another mattress.

For now, we're using the infant side, and he's been very comfortable on it.

The Waterproof Cover Sent Me Down a Rabbit Hole

One feature that ended up being more confusing than I expected was the waterproof cover.

The mattress comes with a removable, machine-washable cover, which I really like. But the box specifically mentions a “waterproof CozyCool toddler side.” That wording immediately made me wonder: wait...does that mean the infant side isn't waterproof?

So, naturally, I went looking for an answer.

Buried in one of DaVinci's product graphics was the clarification I was looking for: the removable cover has a PVC-free waterproof barrier on both sides. So yes, the infant side has waterproof protection too. I just wish the packaging had made that a little more obvious from the beginning.

I also appreciate that the waterproof barrier is PVC-free and that the mattress is GREENGUARD Gold Certified. Those are both nice things to see on something my baby spends so much time sleeping on.

One Thing I Wish DaVinci Sold

While I like that the original cover can be removed and thrown in the washing machine, it does need to air dry.

I immediately thought the easy solution would be to buy a second zippered DaVinci cover and rotate between the two. Unfortunately, I looked everywhere and couldn't find the original cover available to purchase separately.

That's probably my biggest complaint so far.

Instead, I bought additional waterproof fitted crib sheets so I have something easy to swap out when one needs to be washed. I'm currently trying two different ones, and once I've tested them a little longer I'll link my waterproof crib sheet review here.

Overall

So far, I've been really happy with this mattress. The biggest surprise for me was simply how comfortable an infant mattress could feel. I went into the transition thinking that a safe infant sleep surface had to feel as hard as the bassinet mattress we'd been using, and this changed that assumption for me.

I especially appreciate it now that I have a baby who spends his nights rolling onto his belly, rubbing his face against his mattress and somehow moving himself all over his crib in his sleep. He seems comfortable on it, and I feel good about what he's sleeping on.

I like that we'll be able to flip it over for the toddler years, the removable waterproof cover is convenient, and the PVC-free barrier and GREENGUARD Gold certification are nice added features.

There are a couple of things I'd change. The waterproof wording on the packaging could definitely be clearer, and I really wish DaVinci sold replacement zippered covers separately. But overall, this has been a really nice upgrade from his bassinet mattress and one I'm very happy we chose for his crib.
