The High-Value Dog Treat That Made Our Dog Forget His Manners
Like most dog owners, I want Mugen to have a happy life.
Of course he gets walks, toys, and plenty of attention, but one of the easiest ways to add a little excitement to his day is through food.
Mugen has always been extremely food motivated. If we're teaching him a new trick, asking him to behave, or simply trying to convince him that listening is a good idea, food is usually the answer. He also has a habit of staring at us through dinner with the confidence of a dog who knows someone at the table is eventually going to cave.
That someone is usually me.
A few years ago, on a whim, we ordered Evanger's Grain-Free Rabbit Canned Food from Chewy as a special treat for Mugen.
We didn't expect it to become one of the most exciting foods he's ever had, but years later it's still one of his favorites.
The Day Mugen Lost His Mind
Mugen has never been a food guarder.
In all the years we've had him, we've never had issues around food, treats, toys, or sharing space with our cats.
Then we introduced this rabbit food.
The second or third time we served it, Marshmallow and our cat Shadow (RIP my fluffy love) wandered over to investigate what smelled so incredible.
Mugen immediately erupted into chaos.
No growling. No warning. No posturing.
Just instant outrage. Full-blown dog screaming.
The cats backed off, we calmed everyone down, and thankfully it never happened again.
What's even funnier is that Mugen has always been great around other dogs and food too. He's shared space with dog friends throughout his life without any issues, which made this reaction even more surprising.
But the moment has become one of those funny family stories because it perfectly demonstrated how highly Mugen values this food.
If you've ever wanted to know what your dog's absolute favorite thing is, sometimes they make it very clear.
How We Serve It
There are two ways Mugen loves this food.
The first is mixed into his regular kibble.
I like to soak his kibble in a little warm water and then mix in some of the rabbit food. It creates a softer meal, adds moisture, helps ensure he's staying hydrated, and makes dinner feel a little more special.
The second option is serving it by itself.
The problem with that approach is that half a can disappears in what feels like two seconds.
Then Mugen sits there licking his bowl long after every last trace is gone, determined that he might somehow discover more.
Once he's finally convinced the bowl is truly empty, he looks at me as if I've forgotten the second course.
Even the Cats Love It
One thing I appreciate about this product is that both dogs and cats can enjoy it.
It's become an easy way to offer everyone a special treat without needing separate products for each pet.
Since it contains moisture, it's also a nice addition alongside dry food and an easy way to help support hydration, especially for cats that aren't always eager to drink as much water as we'd like.
What I Like About It
As someone who tries to make thoughtful choices for my family and pets, I appreciate that the ingredient list is very simple.
The ingredients are:
- Rabbit
- Water sufficient for processing
- Liver
- Guar gum
That's it.
I also like that it's made with a single protein source, which can be useful for pets that do better with more limited ingredient options.
One important thing to know is that this food is intended for supplemental or intermittent feeding rather than as a complete meal on its own. For our household, that's perfectly fine because we use it as a wet food topper, mixer, or special treat rather than a primary diet.
Would We Buy It Again?
Without hesitation.
We've been buying this rabbit food for years, and it's one of the few pet products that has remained a consistent favorite.
It adds excitement to mealtime, provides extra moisture, and feels like a genuinely special treat for our pets.
Some products come and go from our routine, but this is one we'll continue keeping in the pantry for a very long time.
